Registered Veterinary Technician

 

  • Monitor (examine, observe and record) health of all Center animals daily.
  • Train wokers in animal care procedures, maintenance duties and safety procedures.
  • Manage kennel technicians to ensure employees are following protocols and effectively doing their assigned duties, appropriately dealing with issues as they arise.
  • Work with senior management to address staff problems which require write-ups and/or disiplinary actions. Provide input on staff performance evaluations.
  • Monitor animal care to ensure work is done correctly.
  • Maintain PetPoint web-based data system with animal intakes, adoptions, fosters, rescues, adoption returns, microchips, and euthanizations.
  • Perform and/or oversee dog/cat vaccinations and testing.
  • Provide specialized nursing care (dress wounds,administer medications, record temperature, perform intravenous feedings, fluids and medications)
  • Obtain and record patient case histories and ongoing medical care while at Center.
  • Collect specimens and perform laboratory procedures and testing.
  • Recommend and pursue euthanasia of Center animals as required.
  • Guarantee that animals designated for euthanasia are given food, water, and a clean, sanitary environment until the prescribed time of procedure.
  • Recommand and pursue veterinary care for animals needing care that isn't available at the Center, and those needing a professional diagnosis.
  • Stock and maintain medicines, medical supplies and equipment.
  • Assist cleaning of animal areas in accordance with established procedures as needed
  • Maintain current rescue database.
  • Research new rescue groups, discussing with Director and securing appropriate paperwork (vetting) to ensure quality of rescue group.
  • Actively pursue rescue assistance for Center animals with input from Director.
  • Maintain foster files and follow-up with fosters as needed.
  • Prepare and keep supply of foster paperwork/packets.
  • Target outreach to obtain more foster homes.
  • Conduct Foster Care Orientation.
  • Supervise movement of animals throughout the Center as needed.
  • Supervise Lead kennel technicians and kennel technicians to ensure all duties are performed.
  • Prepare animals, instruments and equipment for surgery.
  • Assist in diagnostic, medical and surgical procedures.
  • Actively participate in the Management Team to provide superior care for Center animals with an eye towrad Continuous Improvement.
  • Will assume management role in absence of Director.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

  • Work requires restraining, lifting, and carrying animals and cages
  • Exposure to insect pests such as fleas and ticks
  • Possibility of being bitten or scratched
  • Job requires standing for long periods of time, bending, squatting, reaching, and heavy lifting (must be able to lift up to 50 pounds)

Qualifications:

  • Registered Veterinary Technician in the state of Indiana
  • Basic computer skills
  • Excellent communication skills - both verbal and written
  • Skills in working independently as well as on teams
  • Problem solving skills
  • Able to work a flexible shift which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and as our staffing needs change
  • Must be able to handle the emotional aspect of work in an animal shelter environment, including the use of euthanasia

Part Time Kennel Technician

 

Description:    PAWS of Dearborn County, Inc. is hiring part-time animal care technician to provide superior care for the animals at our humane center. Duties include cleaning, feeding, medicating, and handling animals as well as animal intake, assessment and adoption in accordance with established policies and procedures. Candidates must have excellent people skills as well as a love for animals. Weekdays, evenings, weekends and holidays are required.

 

Duties

  • Perform Daily cleaning of animal areas in accordance with eastablished procedures
  • Monitor health of all shelter animals
  • Assist with incoming/outgoing animals
  • Provide food and water for animals in accordance with established procedures
  • Move animals throughout the shelter as needed
  • Perform spot cleaningthroughout the day
  • Perform daily cleaning of transfer cages, litter boxes, dishes and laundry
  • Assist with testing, janitorial and other duties as needed
  • Assist front desk when needed with tours, potential adopters, answering phones, etc
  • Other duties as assigned

Work Environment

  • Environment can be dirty, wet and humid
